33 Candidates File Nominations for Budgam and Nagrota Assembly Seats in Jammu and Kashmir

Published on

A total of 33 candidates filed their nomination papers for the Budgam and Nagrota Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir as the deadline for submissions ended on Monday. The political atmosphere in the Union Territory has intensified, with major parties like the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Panthers Party entering the fray.

Strong Contest Expected as 33 Candidates File Nominations for Budgam and Nagrota Seats

According to report, 20 candidates have submitted their nominations for the 27-Budgam seat, while 13 contenders are in the race for the 77-Nagrota constituency. For Budgam, notable candidates include National Conference nominee Aga Syed Mehmood, Peoples Democratic Party’s Aga Muntazir Mehdi, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Aga Syed Mohsin, independent candidates Nazir Ahmad Khan, Muntazir Mohiuddin, Jibran Dar, and Aam Aadmi Party’s Deeba Khan. All filed their papers before the Returning Officer in Budgam on the last day of nominations.

In Nagrota, BJP’s Devyani Rana, Panthers Party’s Harshdev Singh, and National Conference’s Shamim Begum are among the 13 candidates who filed their nomination papers. With leading figures from various political parties contesting, both constituencies are set to witness an intense electoral battle. The filing of 33 nominations has turned these seats into focal points of political attention in Jammu and Kashmir’s upcoming polls.

Budgam and Nagrota Bypolls Scheduled for November 11

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the polling for both Budgam and Nagrota Assembly constituencies on November 11, with the counting of votes to be held on November 14. Officials confirmed that all necessary preparations are underway to ensure a smooth electoral process across both regions.

Vacancies Arise Due to Leadership Changes and Tragic Loss

The Budgam by-poll was necessitated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat, choosing instead to retain his traditional stronghold in Ganderbal following his dual victory in the 2024 Assembly elections. The Nagrota seat became vacant due to the unfortunate demise of senior BJP leader Devinder Singh Rana in October last year. The upcoming election is expected to test the political strength of each party ahead of the next legislative phase in Jammu and Kashmir.
