NCPI Criticises Opposition Walkout at All-Party Meeting Ahead of Monsoon Session

NEW DELHI: The NCPI all-party meeting controversy intensified on Sunday after the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) criticised Opposition parties for briefly walking out of the Centre’s all-party meeting ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Although Opposition leaders returned shortly afterwards and participated in the discussions, the NCPI described the protest as an unprecedented development in parliamentary consultations.

The Centre had convened the meeting to discuss its legislative agenda and seek cooperation from political parties before the Monsoon Session begins.

NCPI Says Differences Should Be Discussed Inside the Meeting

Speaking to reporters, NCPI MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said he had attended numerous all-party meetings during his parliamentary career and had never witnessed Opposition parties staging a walkout.

He said the NCPI has 20 Members of Parliament, including more than one-third women MPs, and asserted that the party would have an independent voice within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He also stated that the party remains committed to the principles of secularism, communal harmony and national unity.

NCPI MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also criticised the protest, saying democratic forums are meant for discussion and dialogue rather than symbolic walkouts. According to her, disagreements should be expressed during deliberations instead of leaving the meeting.

NCPI Announces Merger of 20 MPs

The NCPI also issued a formal notice announcing the merger of 20 Members of Parliament from West Bengal into the party.

In its statement, the party said the new members would strengthen its collective commitment to public service and contribute to nation-building.

Political Row Likely to Continue During Monsoon Session

The NCPI’s remarks come amid an ongoing political dispute over the status of the 20 rebel MPs, a matter that remains under consideration by the Lok Sabha Speaker. While the Opposition has questioned the Centre’s decision to invite the NCPI to the all-party meeting, the newly formed party has defended its participation and insisted it has the right to be represented in parliamentary consultations.

Opposition Objects to NCPI’s Presence at All-Party Meeting

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Opposition parties staged a brief walkout to register their protest against the government’s decision to invite the NCPI.

According to Ramesh, the invitation amounted to recognising the group even though petitions seeking the disqualification of the rebel MPs are still awaiting a decision from the Lok Sabha Speaker.

The NCPI was formed after 20 Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MPs broke away from the party following its defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress has challenged the status of the rebel legislators, and the matter is currently pending before the Speaker.

Opposition leaders argued that extending an invitation to the breakaway group before a formal ruling could undermine established parliamentary procedures.

Government Seeks Consensus Before Parliament Session

The BJP-led government maintained that the all-party meeting was organised to facilitate smooth proceedings during the upcoming session of Parliament and to consult all parliamentary groups on the legislative business scheduled for discussion.

The Monsoon Session is expected to witness sharp debates between the government and the Opposition on a range of political and public issues, including developments in West Bengal, allegations of corruption, inflation, unemployment and other matters expected to dominate parliamentary proceedings.

The government is also likely to introduce several key Bills during the session, making cooperation among political parties important for conducting legislative business.
