Bhubaneswar: A deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwest towards the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast and is likely to cross the coast near Kalingapatnam tonight, according to the weather department.
The system intensified into a deep depression on Monday evening and was moving at around 7 kmph. It was located about 100 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam, 150 km south of Gopalpur, 180 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam and 220 km south-southwest of Puri.
Odisha Deep Depression Landfall Near Kalingapatnam
The system is expected to continue moving west-northwestward over the next few hours before crossing the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam.
The system is likely to make landfall while remaining a deep depression. Coastal areas may experience sustained winds of 55–65 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 75 kmph during the landfall period.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Southern and Western Odisha
The deep depression is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across southern and western Odisha.
Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Kandhamal and Kalahandi are among the districts likely to receive intense rainfall. Some areas could experience prolonged or extremely heavy downpours.
Flooding and Landslide Risk
Authorities have warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas and localised flooding due to intense rainfall. Unpaved roads could be damaged, while transportation may face disruption in affected areas.
There is also a risk of landslides in hilly areas, particularly in Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts.
Odisha Coast Faces Rough Sea Conditions
The sea is expected to remain very rough along the Odisha coast, with strong winds accompanying the deep depression.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until tomorrow because hazardous marine conditions are expected to continue.
Red flags have been placed at the beaches of Puri and Gopalpur. Tourists have also been prohibited from entering the sea for bathing as a precautionary measure.
33 ODRAF and Fire Services Teams Deployed
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is already affecting several parts of southern and coastal Odisha under the influence of the deep depression.
As a precaution, 33 teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and Fire Services have been deployed at vulnerable locations across the affected areas.
Authorities have urged people living in vulnerable locations to remain alert, follow official weather and disaster management advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and strong winds.
