Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray jointly led the ‘Garjana Morcha’ in Mumbai on Sunday, with opposition parties protesting against the Election Commission of India over alleged voter roll manipulation.

The march began at Metro Cinema and moved towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. Leaders and workers from several opposition parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), Congress, Communist parties and the Peasants and Workers Party, joined the protest.

Thousands of demonstrators took part in the march while carrying the Tricolour instead of party flags. The protesters demanded accountability from the Election Commission, withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision process and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Raj Thackeray Questions Maharashtra Election Process

Addressing the gathering, Raj Thackeray questioned the recent election outcomes in Maharashtra and referred to what he described as a lack of public celebration following the Assembly election results.

He also raised questions over the increase in Maharashtra’s voter base after the Lok Sabha elections. Thackeray claimed that the number of voters increased by around 40 to 60 lakh within a period of about six months.

He described the increase as an attempt to compromise electoral integrity. These were political allegations raised at the rally and were not independently established in the material provided.

Raj Thackeray also recalled his earlier concerns about EVMs and voter lists, saying he had raised the issue with senior political leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Sharad Pawar, during 2017-2018.

Raj Thackeray Demands End to SIR

The MNS chief opposed the Special Intensive Revision process and alleged that it could result in legitimate voters being excluded while allowing bogus entries into electoral rolls.

He called for the process to be scrapped in Maharashtra and demanded that future elections be conducted using paper ballots.

Thackeray also appealed to political parties to raise the issue in Delhi and stressed that elections should be conducted through what he described as legitimate and fair means.

Uddhav Thackeray Targets Election Commission

Uddhav Thackeray also criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre and alleged that political institutions were being brought under greater central control.

He specifically targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for his removal. Uddhav also questioned the protections available to the Chief Election Commissioner during the tenure and after retirement.

The remarks formed part of the opposition’s broader criticism of the Election Commission and its handling of the electoral process.

Thackeray Cousins Share Stage With Opposition Parties

The joint appearance of Raj and Uddhav Thackeray marked a public display of political coordination between the two Thackeray-led parties.

The protest also brought together several parties associated with the Maha Vikas Aghadi, along with Communist parties and the Peasants and Workers Party.

The participants used the march to raise concerns about voter rolls, the SIR process and the use of electronic voting systems, making electoral transparency the central issue of the demonstration.
