Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday launched the Commissionerate Police’s Jeevan Jindabad 2.0 awareness campaign in Bhubaneswar, calling for concerted efforts to eliminate addiction from the state and keep young people away from drugs and other harmful substances.
Addressing students, youth and senior officials at the Railway Auditorium, Majhi said addiction affects not only individuals but also families and society. He reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance approach and inaugurated a dedicated Commissionerate Police website linked to the Nashamukta Bharat initiative.
Campaign Focuses on Youth and Addiction
Majhi described human life as a precious gift and urged young people to deal with setbacks without losing hope.
According to the Chief Minister, the first edition of the Jeevan Jindabad campaign had helped address suicidal tendencies. The new edition expands the campaign’s focus to substance abuse, with an emphasis on encouraging young people to pursue education, sports and creative activities.
The launch programme featured performances by established artists, including Jibana Jindabad and Nashamukta Yuvasamaj Vikashita Bharat. An awareness play titled Bhuta Manishara Nishaku Na was also staged.
Majhi praised the performances and encouraged the audience to take practical lessons from the programme’s message about the value of life.
CM Raises Concern Over Alcohol and Drugs
Majhi expressed concern over the role of intoxication in serious crimes and violence against women.
Citing national figures, he said alcohol is associated with around 2.6 lakh to 2.8 lakh deaths in India every year. He also expressed concern over Odisha’s reported second-place ranking in deaths caused by drunk driving.
The Chief Minister directed the police and Excise Department to intensify preventive action against high-risk drugs, including cannabis, opium, cocaine, heroin, brown sugar and synthetic substances.
No New Liquor Shops for Three Years
Majhi highlighted several measures that he said are already in place to address addiction.
Under the new excise policy effective from April 1, no new liquor shops will be opened in Odisha for the next three years.
Local administrations have also been made accountable for dealing with illicit and poisonous liquor, according to the Chief Minister.
He further said production and sale of tobacco- and nicotine-based pan masala and gutka have been fully banned, while school and college campuses have been declared addiction-free zones.
Majhi said the Odisha government is committed to the deadline set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to make India free from addiction by the end of 2029.
CM Urges Parents to Watch for Warning Signs
Majhi asked parents to pay attention to sudden changes in their children’s behaviour, saying such changes could indicate a problem requiring attention.
He also pointed to a positive trend among some young people who, according to him, are choosing to spend money on protein and energy drinks instead of addictive substances.
The campaign’s key messages include “No to addiction, yes to life” and “Life is beautiful, don’t destroy it.”
Senior Police Officials Attend Launch
Director General of Police Vinaytosh Mishra, Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh, senior police officers, distinguished guests and a large number of students and young people attended the launch programme.
Through Jeevan Jindabad 2.0, the Commissionerate Police is seeking to take the anti-addiction message beyond the launch event and into communities across Odisha, with young people at the centre of the awareness effort.
