Why the Stock Market Fell Today: Sensex Tanks 636 Points, Nifty Drops Below 24,550

Published on

Stock Markets Today: On June 3, 2025, the Indian stock market witnessed a sharp decline, with both benchmark indices — the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty — registering losses amid widespread selloff pressures. The Sensex plunged 636.24 points (0.78%) to close at 80,737.51, while the Nifty fell by 174.10 points (0.70%) to settle at 24,542.50.

Key Reasons Behind the Market Decline:

1. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) Sell-Off
FIIs were net sellers in the market, offloading equities worth ₹2,590 crore. Market analysts suggest this selling is largely driven by valuation concerns, with foreign investors hesitant to invest further at elevated price levels.

2. Valuation Concerns
Despite recent corrections, Indian market valuations remain high. A report by Kotak Institutional Equities flagged expensive valuations across sectors, warning that domestic headwinds in consumption, investment, and outsourcing sectors, combined with global macroeconomic challenges, are making investors cautious.

3. Global Economic Worries
Weak factory data from China added to global market anxiety. The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing PMI for May dropped to 48.3 (below the 50-mark indicating contraction), raising concerns about the impact of U.S. tariffs and global economic momentum. Major Asian markets also ended lower, and U.S. futures were trading in the red.

4. Sectoral Drag and Key Laggards
Stocks of major companies like Adani Ports (down 2.42%), Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid, and TCS were among the biggest losers. Adani Group stocks and other heavyweights like L&T and Maruti also contributed to the market’s downward pressure.

5. Resilience in Broader Markets
Interestingly, the BSE Smallcap Index remained flat, while the BSE Midcap Index was down by only 0.4%, indicating some resilience in the broader market.
