During an interview with a French newspaper, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized that China must avoid ambiguity or double standards in addressing terrorism, particularly given its close ties with Pakistan. He highlighted terrorism as a global concern, not confined to any one country. He stated that while India has no conflict with any nation per se, it maintains a firm stance against terrorism. He criticized Pakistan for continuing to shelter and support terrorists, affirming that India will act decisively against threats, even beyond its borders.
On India-China relations, Dr. Jaishankar noted the potential for gradual improvement and mentioned ongoing discussions about restoring direct flights, which were halted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing broader geopolitical matters, he affirmed India’s call for a suspension of hostilities in the Russia-Ukraine war and mentioned India’s dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv, stressing that peace can only come through negotiations. He also expressed hope for concluding a trade deal with the U.S. before existing tariff suspensions expire next month.
Reaffirming India’s strong relationship with France, Dr. Jaishankar expressed interest in expanding cooperation in defense, nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, space, and environmental initiatives.
Finally, he reiterated India’s aspiration for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, asserting that India is prepared for a larger global role. He underscored India’s contributions to peacekeeping, regional stability, and global development.
