India Urges Permanent Border Solution with China

Published on

India has reaffirmed the need for a permanent solution to border demarcation with China, highlighting the importance of revitalizing existing mechanisms and restoring trust between the two countries. The call comes in the backdrop of lingering tensions since the 2020 border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

During a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting in Qingdao, China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh engaged with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, in candid discussions aimed at normalizing relations.

Structured Roadmap for Peace and Stability

Mr. Singh emphasized the need to maintain peace and tranquillity along the Indo-China border, while pushing for a structured roadmap to resolve outstanding issues through permanent engagement and de-escalation.

He acknowledged the efforts from both sides to move toward normalcy in bilateral ties, but underlined the importance of bridging the trust deficit that arose after the Galwan Valley clash in 2020. The Defence Minister said that a stable and cooperative relationship between India and China is essential for regional peace, stability, and development in Asia and beyond.

Agreed Consultations on Key Issues

The two leaders agreed to continue dialogue at multiple levels, with a focus on:

  • Disengagement of troops in friction areas
  • De-escalation of military presence
  • Improved border management
  • Eventual delimitation and demarcation of the boundary

Rajnath Singh also used the opportunity to brief Admiral Dong on the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed multiple civilian lives. He informed his counterpart about India’s Operation Sindoor, launched to dismantle cross-border terrorist networks operating from Pakistan.

Singh reiterated India’s stance that terrorism in any form must not be tolerated, and urged regional cooperation to counter such threats.
