Kathmandu: At least 31 people have lost their lives and 151 others sustained injuries in monsoon-triggered disasters across Nepal since the rainy season began on May 28, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to Suresh Sunar, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Nepal reported 682 monsoon-related incidents between May 28 and June 30. These included floods, landslides, lightning strikes, snake bites, animal attacks, windstorms, and fire outbreaks.

To bolster rescue operations, the NDRRMA signed an agreement with the Association for Civil Aviation Operations to deploy private helicopters for relief and rescue missions throughout the season.

Lightning emerged as the deadliest hazard, causing eight deaths, followed by floods and high-altitude sickness claiming four lives each. Additionally, animal attacks resulted in eight fatalities, while snake bites killed two. Isolated deaths were also reported due to windstorms and heavy rainfall.

Beyond human casualties, the disasters caused the death of 222 animals and property losses worth NPR 333.43 million. At least 97 homes were damaged, and over 1,026 families were impacted by landslides and floods in multiple districts, Mr. Sunar added.
