PM Modi Addresses Ghana Parliament, Receives Nation’s Highest Civilian Honour

Published on

Accra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Parliament of Ghana today, calling the India-Ghana bond “sweeter than Ghana’s Sugar Loaf Pineapple.” He emphasized that the friendship between the two democracies is based on shared values, openness, and respect for diversity.

Hailing India as the mother of democracy, PM Modi praised Ghana’s democratic resilience, describing the West African nation as a “beacon of inspiration” for the continent. He underlined that for India, democracy is not merely a system but a core value.

The Prime Minister was conferred with Ghana’s highest civilian awardThe Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana—by President John Mahama, in recognition of his global statesmanship. Modi dedicated the honour to the youth of both nations and the lasting partnership between India and Ghana.

Earlier, PM Modi paid homage at the Nkrumah Memorial Park, honouring Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s founding father. He also engaged with the Indian community in Accra and received a warm welcome from the diaspora.

During delegation-level talks at Jubilee House—a structure built with Indian support—both leaders agreed to upgrade ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, focusing on trade, digital tech, defence, energy, and cultural exchange.

Four MoUs were signed covering culture, standards, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and the formation of a Joint Commission Mechanism. India also pledged assistance in building a vaccine hub and strengthening digital public infrastructure in Ghana.

In a social media update, PM Modi expressed optimism about future cooperation in critical minerals, maritime security, energy, and Ayurveda. He termed his dialogue with President Mahama “extremely fruitful.”

Modi’s visit signals India’s renewed focus on Africa and the Global South, particularly in health, commerce, and geopolitical collaboration. It is also expected to boost morale among the 15,000-strong Indian diaspora in Ghana.
