Shubman Gill’s Historic 269 Powers India’s Greatest Test Comeback vs England at Edgbaston

Published on

India pulled off one of their greatest Test match comebacks on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, courtesy of a monumental innings by captain Shubman Gill, who scored a record-breaking 269 off 387 balls. After slumping to 211/5, India turned the tables by adding 376 runs—the most ever by India after the fifth wicket in a Test innings.

Gill’s marathon knock is not just his maiden Test double century, but also a historic feat in multiple respects. He became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England and surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval (1979) to become the highest individual scorer for India on English soil.

Supporting acts came from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made a fluent 87, and Ravindra Jadeja, who contributed a valuable 89 in a 203-run sixth-wicket partnership with Gill. Later, Kuldeep Yadav chipped in to push India past the 500-run mark.

India’s total of 587 is now the sixth-highest by a visiting team at Edgbaston and the first 500+ score by a touring side since South Africa’s 594/5 declared in 2003. It also marked only the second time a visiting team had two century partnerships in the same innings at this venue.

Gill’s knock not only saved India from a potential collapse but has now etched his name into the record books, showcasing leadership and batting brilliance on foreign soil.
