Australia to Recognise Palestine, Confirms PM Anthony Albanese

In a major diplomatic shift, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday (August 11, 2025) that Australia will recognise Palestine, joining France, Britain, and Canada in signalling their intent to do the same.

The decision comes amid mounting pressure from Albanese’s Cabinet and public opinion in Australia, as well as growing criticism over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Australia to recognise Palestine at UN General Assembly

Mr. Albanese confirmed that the move will be formalised at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. He said the decision is based on commitments received from the Palestinian Authority, which include:

• No role for Hamas in a future Palestinian government
• Demilitarisation of Gaza
• Conduct of free and fair elections

Push for a two-state solution

Calling the two-state solution “humanity’s best hope”, Albanese stressed that the recognition aims to help end the cycle of violence in the Middle East and address the ongoing suffering and starvation in Gaza.

Australia’s government has also openly criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent announcement of a sweeping new military offensive in Gaza, warning it would worsen the humanitarian situation.
