Advocate Rakesh Kishore Targeted in Slipper Attack at Delhi’s Karkardooma Court

Advocate Rakesh Kishore, who had earlier sparked nationwide controversy by throwing a shoe at former Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court, was assaulted on Tuesday by unidentified individuals at the Karkardooma Court complex in Delhi. In a shocking incident inside the busy court premises, a group of people allegedly attempted to beat him with slippers, triggering chaos before bystanders intervened and pulled the attackers away.

A video of the incident has since surfaced on social media and is rapidly circulating across multiple platforms. The clip shows several individuals rushing towards Kishore and attempting to strike him with slippers while others try to stop the assault. However, the video does not clearly reveal the identities of the attackers, and so far, their motives remain unknown.

The Karkardooma Court complex witnesses heavy daily footfall of lawyers, litigants, and court officials. At this stage, there is no official clarity on how the incident unfolded within the court premises, whether security staff were present at the moment of the attack, or how the situation escalated so suddenly.

Rakesh Kishore Attack: What Happened Inside Karkardooma Court

According to available visuals and eyewitness accounts circulating online, the confrontation appeared sudden, with the assailants confronting Kishore inside the court complex and attempting to humiliate him by hitting him with slippers. The altercation was brought under control only after several people intervened to separate the parties.

Despite the public nature of the incident, no group or individual has stepped forward to claim responsibility. Authorities have also not yet issued any formal statement explaining the motive behind the attack. It also remains unclear whether Kishore sustained any injuries during the assault.

As of now, neither the local district Bar Association nor the Bar Council of India has issued a public response regarding the episode. It is also not known whether Kishore plans to lodge a police complaint or pursue any formal legal action related to this latest attack.

Background: The Shoe-Throwing Incident That Brought Kishore Into Spotlight

Rakesh Kishore first came into the national spotlight on October 6, when he hurled a shoe towards then CJI BR Gavai during live court proceedings inside the Supreme Court. Security personnel immediately detained and removed him from the courtroom before the situation could further escalate.

During the dramatic outburst, Kishore reportedly raised slogans referring to the protection of Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism). His protest was linked to remarks made by Justice Gavai during a hearing connected to the restoration of a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho. In that case, Justice Gavai had observed that those who felt hurt could “ask the deity” for answers—a comment that provoked sharp criticism from the lawyer.

Kishore was also reportedly angered by Justice Gavai’s remarks during an overseas tour to Mauritius, where the former CJI had spoken against bulldozer demolitions in India and cited court orders staying such actions. Kishore viewed those remarks as objectionable, which he later cited as part of the reason for his courtroom protest.

Rakesh Kishore Attack: Legal Fallout After Supreme Court Incident

Following the shoe-throwing episode in the Supreme Court, swift disciplinary action was taken against Kishore. The Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended his licence to practise law with immediate effect and announced that formal disciplinary proceedings would be initiated against him. The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) also terminated his membership.

Soon after, the Attorney General for India granted consent to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against Kishore. However, during a subsequent hearing, a Supreme Court Bench indicated that it was not inclined to continue contempt action against him. Instead, the Court observed that it may focus on evolving better safeguards to prevent such security breaches in the future.

Despite this partial legal reprieve, Kishore continued to remain a controversial figure within legal circles, with sharp divisions over his conduct and the larger questions of courtroom security and freedom of expression.

Questions Over Security and Accountability After Court Premises Assault

Tuesday’s slipper attack has once again raised serious concerns over security inside court complexes, especially in high-footfall judicial hubs like Karkardooma. The fact that such an incident could unfold in a public court area without immediate visible restraint from security staff has sparked fresh debate within the legal fraternity.

With no official statement yet from police, court authorities, or bar bodies, uncertainty continues over whether this was an act of personal vendetta, a spontaneous public reaction, or something more organised. The lack of clarity on whether Kishore will formally complain further deepens the mystery surrounding the incident.

As investigations are awaited, the attack has reopened wider discussions on courtroom decorum, advocate conduct, and the safety of individuals—controversial or otherwise—within judicial premises.
