Afghanistan Bus Collision Kills 79 on Herat-Kabul Highway, Many Victims Were Expelled Refugees
A tragic road accident in western Afghanistan has claimed the lives of 79 people after an overcrowded bus carrying Afghan refugees expelled from Iran collided with a motorcycle and a truck. The deadly incident occurred late on Tuesday on the Herat-Kabul highway, approximately 30 minutes outside Herat city, officials confirmed.
Ahmdullah Muttaqi, head of the information department for Herat’s provincial government, said the passengers were Afghans recently deported from Iran and were travelling from the border towards Kabul. The bus immediately caught fire after the collision.

The Afghanistan bus collision kills 79 update was confirmed by Abdul Mateen Qaniee, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, who added that 17 children were among the deceased. Videos from the crash site showed the burning vehicle engulfed in flames and firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze. By the time the fire was controlled, only the charred metal frame of the bus remained.
Poor Infrastructure and Unsafe Driving Highlighted
Traffic accidents are unfortunately common in Afghanistan, where decades of war have severely damaged transportation infrastructure. Authorities said that lack of road safety and drivers not adhering to traffic rules continue to contribute to such catastrophic accidents. The Herat-Kabul stretch is known to be particularly dangerous due to heavy traffic and poor road conditions.

Reacting to the tragedy, Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid urged transportation authorities to conduct a detailed investigation. “We urge transportation authorities to provide accurate information about the accident as soon as possible and to share their findings regarding the responsible party,” he said.
Herat Hosting Thousands of Deported Migrants
Herat province, which borders Iran and Turkmenistan, is presently hosting tens of thousands of Afghan migrants who have been recently deported from Iran. Many of them undertake long and difficult journeys across the country to return to their hometowns or reach Kabul, often relying on overcrowded buses with minimal safety standards.
