Mumbai: An Air India flight (AI639) operating from Mumbai to Chennai was forced to make a precautionary return to Mumbai on Friday after crew members reported a burning smell in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely and passengers were shifted to a different aircraft to resume their journey.
An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating:
“The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and an aircraft change was initiated. Our ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption.”

Security Alert Detected on Air India Aircraft
On the same day, Air India also reported a non-specific security alert on one of its aircraft. The alert triggered a thorough security inspection, following which the aircraft was cleared for its next flight.
The airline emphasized its commitment to safety in an official statement:
“Standard security procedures were duly carried out, and the aircraft has been cleared for the next flight. Air India accords top priority to the safety and security of its passengers and crew.”
Air India Express Flight Returns to Delhi Due to Technical Glitch
In another incident earlier this week, Air India Express flight IX2564, flying from Delhi to Jammu, had to return to Delhi mid-flight due to a technical issue. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, had taken off at 11:04 AM after a scheduled departure time of 10:40 AM.
According to flight tracking data, it was expected to arrive in Jammu at 12:05 PM but was diverted back to Delhi shortly after takeoff. The airline arranged an alternative aircraft for the passengers.
An Air India Express spokesperson stated:
“An alternative aircraft was arranged to operate our Delhi-Jammu flight after the original aircraft returned due to a technical issue. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
These developments come in the wake of the tragic Air India-171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed the lives of 241 out of 242 passengers and crew. The recent incidents, though not fatal, highlight growing concerns over operational safety and technical reliability within India’s aviation sector.
