Ajit Doval Visits Moscow as Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Russian Oil Imports
India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is currently in Moscow to meet with top Russian officials amid rising global tensions. His visit comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to sharply raise tariffs on Indian exports, citing New Delhi’s ongoing oil trade with Russia.
The Ajit Doval Moscow visit is aimed at strengthening India-Russia defence and security cooperation while also addressing concerns arising from the latest geopolitical shifts, particularly Trump’s allegations that India is “fuelling Russia’s war machine” by purchasing discounted crude oil and reselling it for profits.
Ajit Doval Moscow visit focuses on defence and strategic ties
During his Moscow visit on Wednesday, Ajit Doval is expected to discuss a wide range of issues related to India-Russia military and energy cooperation. A major agenda item is the upcoming Modi–Putin summit, where several strategic agreements may be announced.
As per Russian media reports, both sides are likely to review:
- The ongoing supply of Russian oil to India
- Defence industry collaboration
- Possibilities of acquiring more S-400 air defence systems
- Maintenance infrastructure development in India
- Exploration of purchasing Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets
The visit is reportedly part of a pre-scheduled diplomatic engagement, but the current timing underscores the urgency brought on by recent U.S. threats.
Ajit Doval Moscow visit amid oil trade tensions and US criticism
President Trump has recently accused India of undermining global sanctions by importing cheap Russian crude oil and making “big profits.” He warned of a “very substantial” increase in the existing 25% tariffs on Indian goods. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected the accusations, calling them “unjustified.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, without naming the U.S., indirectly criticized the tariff threat, saying, “We live in complicated and uncertain times… Our collective desire is to see a fair and representative global order, not one dominated by a few.”
The MEA also highlighted the double standards in targeting India while overlooking the European Union’s $67.5 billion trade with Russia and the U.S.’s own imports of uranium, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia.
India has maintained that its energy security and national interests come first and that it will continue to take necessary measures to safeguard its economic future.
