New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his allegations of “vote chori” and alleged collusion between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission. Shah claimed that the Congress was using these allegations as an excuse to explain its electoral defeats.
Shah made the remarks at an event in Delhi, where he launched projects worth ₹8,941 crore aimed at cleaning the Yamuna river, according to a report by national media. The event also coincided with his birthday.
The Home Minister also criticised the governance record of the previous Arvind Kejriwal-led government in Delhi and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab.
Shah Says BJP’s Electoral Success Has Troubled Opposition
Responding to the opposition’s allegations, Shah argued that the BJP’s repeated electoral victories had prompted its political rivals to question the election process.
He said the Opposition had resorted to claims of “vote chori” because it was struggling to accept the BJP’s success at the ballot box.
Shah also accused Rahul Gandhi of raising the issue of alleged vote theft to protect the votes of what he described as “infiltrators”.
The Home Minister pointed to the BJP’s electoral performance in several states, arguing that the party had won elections even before Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.
He questioned whether the Congress’s electoral setbacks had started only after Modi assumed office, noting that the party had remained out of power in several states for extended periods.
Amit Shah Targets Rahul Gandhi Over Foreign Visits
Shah also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi over his foreign trips while defending his own confidence about the BJP’s future electoral performance.
He said his political assessments were based on his familiarity with the country and his connection with its people.
The remarks came amid an ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over allegations concerning electoral integrity and the role of the Election Commission.
‘Double Standards Won’t Work’: Shah Attacks Rahul Gandhi
Taking aim at Gandhi’s criticism of institutions, Shah argued that political leaders should accept court decisions regardless of whether the verdicts favour them.
He alleged that Gandhi considered court rulings fair when they went in his favour but questioned them when the outcomes were unfavourable.
Shah said such alleged double standards would not work, directly addressing the Congress leader as “Rahul ji”.
The comments added to the continuing political dispute between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, institutional accountability and the legitimacy of election results.
Shah Says Protests Cannot Replace Electoral Mandate
Shah also criticised Rahul Gandhi’s participation in protests in Delhi, arguing that demonstrations and political pressure could not overturn the public mandate.
He maintained that winning elections required political support from voters rather than sit-ins, protests or political manoeuvres.
The BJP leader’s remarks reflect the wider political clash between the ruling party and the Congress, with allegations of electoral irregularities remaining a key point of contention.
