Amrit Bharat Express: Indian Railways has always been the backbone of the country’s social and economic life, connecting millions across vast distances every day. From students and migrant workers to small traders and families, trains remain the most trusted and affordable mode of long-distance transport. Continuing this legacy, Indian Railways has launched a new chapter in inclusive mobility with the Amrit Bharat Express, designed to bring comfort, reliability and modern facilities to ordinary passengers at economical fares.

Introduced in December 2023 as a flagship initiative of the Amrit Kaal vision, the Amrit Bharat Express is a fully non-AC long-distance sleeper train aimed at handling heavy passenger volumes, especially during festive seasons and peak migration periods. With a simple fare structure of around ₹500 per 1,000 kilometres and no dynamic pricing, the service ensures transparency and affordability for all sections of society.

Amrit Bharat Express transforming affordable long-distance rail travel

The Amrit Bharat Express has been created specifically for the non-AC segment, where demand is highest. Each train is configured with 11 General Class coaches, 8 Sleeper Class coaches, one Pantry Car and two Second Class–cum–Luggage–cum–Guard Vans with disabled-friendly compartments. These modern coaches are designed to improve safety, comfort and durability while catering to large passenger volumes.

Since its launch, 30 Amrit Bharat Express trains have already become operational, and nine more services are set to be introduced. This rapid expansion reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening affordable long-distance connectivity and ensuring that quality rail travel is not limited to premium passengers alone.

Boosting national integration through strategic routes

The newly announced routes focus on connecting border regions, the North-East, industrial corridors and major metropolitan hubs. Services such as Kamakhya–Rohtak, Dibrugarh–Lucknow and Alipurduar–Bengaluru are designed to bridge distant regions and improve access to employment, education and healthcare.

By linking spiritual centres, tourism hotspots and economic hubs, these trains are expected to stimulate regional trade, small businesses and domestic tourism. From the Himalayan foothills to southern port cities, the network is steadily weaving the country closer together.

Amrit Bharat Express transforming affordable long-distance rail travel

What sets the Amrit Bharat Express apart is its focus on scale and inclusivity. Unlike premium trains, it targets the everyday traveller who depends on railways for livelihood and family needs. With no surge pricing and consistent fares, passengers can plan journeys without worrying about sudden cost spikes.

The trains are also built to manage seasonal rush efficiently, reducing pressure on existing services and offering dependable alternatives during peak travel periods.

A cost-effective alternative in a changing mobility landscape

At a time when air and road travel costs are rising, the Amrit Bharat Express strengthens railways as the most economical long-distance option. Its integration with India’s broader infrastructure push supports balanced regional development, ensuring that growth is not limited to major cities alone.

The expanding network aligns with India’s long-term vision of inclusive infrastructure, where connectivity becomes a tool for social cohesion and economic opportunity.

The Amrit Bharat Express marks a decisive shift towards people-centric rail development. By combining affordability, wide geographic reach and modern design, it reinforces Indian Railways’ role as the lifeline of mass transport. As more routes are added, the service is set to play a lasting role in connecting people, regions and opportunities across India.
