ANUGOLA: A 12 hour Anugola bandh over coal transportation disrupted normal life across Odisha’s Anugola district on Wednesday, with Congress workers shutting down commercial activity and staging picketing at several locations.

The district Congress unit called the shutdown over continuing concerns surrounding coal-laden trucks and the alleged arrest of five protesters from Kosala panchayat in cases the party described as false. Police were deployed in strength as authorities worked to prevent any major law and order situation.

The protest reflects a larger conflict in one of Odisha’s key industrial districts, where large-scale coal transportation is vital to the economy but residents say the daily movement of heavy vehicles is creating serious problems for local communities.

Anugola Bandh Over Coal Transportation and Public Safety

Congress has demanded an immediate review of the coal transportation system and the withdrawal of cases against the five protesters who remain in judicial custody.

The party had previously warned that a district-wide shutdown would follow if the concerns raised by local residents were not addressed. The bandh was subsequently observed from 6 am until 6 pm, affecting shops, businesses and road traffic across several parts of Angul.

Coal Truck Movement Raises Pollution and Road Safety Concerns

Congress leaders claim that more than 2,000 coal-loaded trucks pass through several parts of the district every night, generally between 9 pm and 6 am.

The affected routes include Chhendipada, Kosala, Jarasingha, Anugola town, Turanga and Banarpal. Residents have alleged that the volume of heavy vehicle traffic has increased dust and noise pollution while contributing to congestion, road accidents and health-related concerns.

The issue goes beyond the bandh itself because Angul’s industrial economy depends heavily on the movement of coal and other materials. The challenge for authorities is to maintain uninterrupted industrial transportation without allowing surrounding communities to bear the full cost through pollution, unsafe roads and traffic disruption.

Congress has called for an immediate assessment of the situation and permanent measures covering dust suppression, road safety and traffic management. The party has also submitted a memorandum seeking coordination between relevant government departments.

Coal Transportation Conflict Tests Odisha Administration

The Anugola dispute highlights the pressure created when industrial logistics expand faster than local infrastructure and public safeguards.

Residents are seeking practical measures rather than temporary restrictions, including better dust control, safer roads and improved management of heavy vehicles. At the same time, any long-term solution will need to account for the economic importance of coal transportation in the district.

The latest bandh has therefore put renewed pressure on the Odisha administration to balance industrial requirements with public safety and community welfare. The government’s response to the transport complaints and the cases involving the five protesters is likely to shape the next phase of the dispute.
