Apple to Power Revamped Siri With Google Gemini Models in Major AI Partnership

Apple confirms a multi-year deal with Google to integrate Gemini AI models into Siri, deepening Big Tech collaboration and reshaping the AI rivalry with OpenAI.

New Delhi: The Apple Siri Google Gemini deal marks a major development in the global artificial intelligence race, with Apple announcing that its revamped Siri voice assistant will be powered by Google’s Gemini models later this year. The multi-year agreement strengthens ties between the two tech giants and significantly boosts Alphabet’s position as it competes with OpenAI for dominance in foundational AI models.

The partnership represents a significant endorsement of Google’s AI capabilities and opens up access to Apple’s massive ecosystem of more than two billion active devices worldwide.

Apple Siri Google Gemini Deal Expands Big Tech Alliance

Google said Apple selected its technology after extensive evaluation, determining that Gemini models offer the strongest base for Apple Foundation Models. According to Google, its AI will not only power Siri but also support other future Apple Intelligence features.

The agreement follows months of competition between Alphabet and OpenAI for Apple’s AI business. While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, industry analysts see it as a strategic win for Google, whose AI already underpins Samsung’s Galaxy AI offerings.

Apple had previously integrated ChatGPT into its devices in late 2024, allowing Siri to tap into OpenAI’s chatbot for complex queries. Apple confirmed that this ChatGPT integration will remain unchanged, positioning it as an optional layer rather than the default intelligence engine.

Industry Reactions and OpenAI Implications

The announcement has raised questions about the future role of OpenAI within Apple’s AI ecosystem. According to Parth Talsania, CEO of Equisights Research, Apple’s decision shifts OpenAI into a supporting position, with ChatGPT primarily handling opt-in, advanced queries rather than serving as Siri’s core intelligence layer.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticised the agreement, warning that it could lead to excessive concentration of power for Google, which already controls Android and the Chrome browser. Musk, who founded AI startup x AI, has been investing heavily to compete with leading AI firms by building large-scale foundational models.

Following the emergence of Gemini 3, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” directive internally to accelerate development, reflecting the intensifying competition in the AI space.

AI Strategy Shift and Market Impact

The deal comes as Apple works to overcome recent challenges in artificial intelligence, including delays to Siri upgrades, executive reshuffles and a muted response to its initial generative AI rollout. The Gemini partnership is expected to help Apple accelerate its AI roadmap while maintaining its emphasis on privacy.

Google said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, ensuring data protection and adherence to Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.

The agreement also builds on a long-standing partnership that makes Google the default search engine on Apple devices a deal that generates tens of billions of dollars annually for Apple while driving massive search traffic to Google.

Investor reaction was swift, with Alphabet’s market capitalisation surpassing $4 trillion on Monday. The company’s shares surged after gaining 65 per cent last year, driven by optimism around its aggressive push into frontier AI models, as well as image and video generation technologies.
