Aurangabad Railway Station Officially Renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Station

Published on

The Central Railway has officially announced that the Aurangabad railway station in Maharashtra has been renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station, marking another step in honoring Maratha heritage. The new station code will be CPSN, as confirmed in an official release by Central Railway. The station operates under the Nanded Division of the South Central Railway.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station Renaming Marks a Historic Change

The renaming of Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station follows the Maharashtra government’s gazette notification issued on October 15 by the BJP-led Mahayuti government. This move comes nearly three years after the city of Aurangabad was formally renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, symbolizing respect for Maratha history and cultural pride.

A Tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj

The city’s original name was associated with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, but the change reflects a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. The renaming represents a significant cultural and historical reclamation, emphasizing Maharashtra’s deep-rooted Maratha identity and heritage.

Historical Legacy of the Station

The Aurangabad railway station, now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar station, was first opened in 1900 during the rule of the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Over a century old, it has served as a vital link for travelers visiting central Maharashtra and beyond.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A Hub of History and Tourism

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) remains a major tourist destination, surrounded by renowned historical sites such as the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With its rich blend of history, culture, and architecture, the city continues to be a beacon of Maharashtra’s glorious past and vibrant present.
