Devotee Crushed to Death by Chariot Wheel During Rath Yatra in Ganjam’s Shikula Village

Published on

Bhubaneswar: A tragic incident marred the Rath Yatra celebrations in Shikula village under Purushottampur police station limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district, as a 30-year-old devotee lost his life after being crushed under the wheel of a moving chariot.

Devotee Falls Amidst Crowd During Chariot Pulling

The incident took place on Friday afternoon during the chariot pulling ceremony, which had drawn a large number of devotees from the surrounding areas. According to eyewitnesses, Shivram Behera, the victim, accidentally slipped and fell near the moving chariot amid the dense crowd.

In a tragic turn, one of the chariot’s heavy wooden wheels rolled over him before anyone could react.

Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome

Shivram was immediately rushed to Purushottampur Hospital in a critical condition. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported.

Local police have taken custody of the body and have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that crowd mismanagement and lack of proper safety arrangements may have contributed to the accident.

Authorities are also questioning event organizers and eyewitnesses to gather more details.

This tragic event has cast a shadow over the otherwise festive Rath Yatra celebrations in the region. Devotees and villagers have expressed grief and demanded stricter safety measures during such large-scale religious processions in the future.
