Kolkata: The Election Commission of India on Monday ordered the suspension of six additional government officials in West Bengal for alleged misconduct, negligence and misuse of statutory powers during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In separate communications addressed to the state Chief Secretary, the Commission directed that all six officers who were serving as Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) during the SIR exercise be placed under suspension with immediate effect. The Commission also ordered that disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them without delay.
Officials Suspended Across Multiple Districts
Among those suspended are Sk. Murshid Alam, Assistant Director of Agriculture and AERO for the 57-Suti Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, and Dalia Ray Choudhury, Women Development Officer and AERO for the 16-Maynaguri Assembly constituency in Jalpaiguri district.
The Commission also ordered the suspension of Sefaur Rahaman, Assistant Director of Agriculture and AERO for the 56-Samserganj Assembly constituency in Murshidabad.
In South 24 Parganas district, Satyajit Das, Joint Block Development Officer (BDO), and Joydeep Kundu, Fisheries Extension Officer both functioning as AEROs for the 139 -Canning Purba Assembly constituency have been placed under suspension.
Additionally, Nitish Das, Revenue Officer and AERO for the 55-Farakka Assembly constituency in Murshidabad, and Debashis Biswas, Joint BDO and AERO for the 229-Debra Assembly constituency in Paschim Medinipur district, were also suspended.
In its orders, the Election Commission stated that the officers were prima facie found guilty of serious misconduct, dereliction of official duties and misuse of statutory powers in connection with the SIR process.
The cadre-controlling authorities concerned have been directed to initiate disciplinary proceedings immediately and inform the Commission about the action taken.
Follow-Up to Earlier Disciplinary Action over SIR
The latest suspensions follow the Commission’s earlier decision to suspend four officials in West Bengal and direct the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) against them over alleged irregularities during the SIR exercise.

As FIRs were not registered within the stipulated time, the Commission summoned West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty to the Commission’s headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan last Friday.
Subsequently, the Commission granted the state government time until Tuesday to ensure registration of FIRs against the four previously suspended officials. Meanwhile, it expanded the scope of disciplinary action by ordering the suspension of six more officers.
Tightening Oversight of Electoral Processes
Officials said the Commission’s firm action reflects its resolve to maintain the integrity and transparency of electoral roll management. The Special Intensive Revision exercise is a critical process ahead of elections, and any lapses, the Commission noted, would be dealt with strictly.
With the latest suspensions, the Election Commission has signalled zero tolerance toward procedural violations and administrative negligence in the conduct of election-related duties in the state.
