Flight Operations Disrupted at Delhi Airport Due to Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms

New Delhi: Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the largest airport in India, experienced disruptions early Sunday morning due to intense rainfall and strong winds. The adverse weather conditions led to delays and cancellations of several flights.

In an update posted at 6:50 am on X (formerly Twitter), the Delhi Airport informed travelers that flight schedules had been impacted due to the severe weather the previous night. Passengers were urged to stay informed by checking their flight statuses regularly and staying in contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates.

IndiGo, one of the major domestic airlines, also took to X at 3:59 am to inform passengers of temporary operational delays caused by the inclement weather over Delhi. The airline noted that while conditions were gradually improving, some congestion persisted on the airside. Later, at 5:54 am, IndiGo updated that flight operations had resumed normalcy with the skies clearing up.

Data from the flight tracking website Flightradar24.com showed that numerous flights were either delayed or canceled at Delhi Airport, with departure delays averaging over 30 minutes.

The city witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the early hours of Sunday, causing significant waterlogging in various parts of Delhi, including Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and areas near Terminal 1 of the airport. Similar weather conditions were also reported in parts of Jhajjar in neighboring Haryana.

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a red alert for Delhi and surrounding regions. The alert warned of strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and high-velocity winds within the next two to three hours, and was part of a “Nowcast” based on real-time weather data.

According to the IMD, a thunderstorm system was moving towards Delhi from the west and northwest. This system was expected to bring severe thunderstorm activity, along with dust-raising winds, frequent lightning, and wind speeds ranging from 40 to 60 km/h or higher.

The weather department advised residents to take necessary safety measures. People were cautioned to stay away from open spaces and avoid taking shelter under trees. Additionally, they were warned to steer clear of weak structures and water bodies during the storm.
