Fresh Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal to Bring Heavy Rain to Odisha from Tuesday

Published on

BHUBANESWAR: After a short break in monsoon activity, rainfall is set to intensify across Odisha as a fresh low pressure system is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday announced that a low pressure area is likely to form over the northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around August 13.

According to Manorama Mohanty, director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, the weather system is likely to trigger light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in the state between Tuesday and Thursday.

Odisha Heavy Rain Forecast from Tuesday Due to Low Pressure

Heavy rainfall is likely in Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Rayagada districts on Tuesday. By Wednesday, the Odisha heavy rain forecast extends to Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh districts.

The IMD also warned of heavy rainfall in Gajapati and Ganjam districts within the next 24 hours, influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh, the West Bengal coast, and nearby areas of the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Cyclonic Circulation Adds to Odisha Heavy Rain Forecast

Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in several districts on Saturday. The recent dry spell left Odisha with a 60% rainfall deficit between July 29 and August 4, with only Kendrapara recording above-normal rainfall during the period.
