Game of Thrones Star Highlights Odisha’s Mangrove Restoration Efforts in Global Documentary

Published on

Odisha’s successful mangrove restoration initiatives have gained international attention after being featured in Bloomberg Originals’ documentary series An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet. The series is hosted by Game of Thrones actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is best known for his role as Jaime Lannister.

In the second season’s opening episode titled “Protect”, Coster-Waldau travels to Bagapatia village in Kendrapara district, where local communities displaced by rising sea levels are rebuilding their lives using climate-resilient practices. The episode highlights how men and women from these villages are working together to restore mangroves and protect their coastlines.

The restoration efforts are part of the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project, a joint initiative of the Green Climate Fund, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and the Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Odisha, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Coster-Waldau praised Odisha’s community-driven model, noting that it demonstrates how local action can lead to powerful global climate impact. The documentary aims to inspire optimism by showcasing real-world examples of resilience and environmental stewardship from around the world.
