Hirakud Dam Closes Four Gates as Water Levels Recede Amid Decreased Rainfall

Published on

Bhubaneswar: Authorities at the Hirakud Dam have closed four gates after a noticeable drop in water levels, a result of reduced rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi Basin. As of now, water is being discharged through 16 gates.

On Sunday, the dam had released the season’s first floodwater through 20 gates, following days of sustained heavy rainfall across the basin. However, with a sharp decline in rainfall, dam authorities have recalibrated gate operations to ensure optimal water management and safety.

No Flood Threat in Downstream Areas

Officials have confirmed that there is no immediate flood threat in downstream regions. The situation remains under constant surveillance, with authorities ready to adjust gate operations based on real-time rainfall and river data.

Authorities Maintain Vigilance

The Hirakud Dam administration is on high alert and fully prepared to respond quickly should there be any changes in rainfall patterns or river inflow conditions. Residents in the region have been advised to stay informed, though no evacuation or emergency measures have been deemed necessary at this time.
