Ranchi: A first-year student of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) was found hanging inside his hostel room on Saturday night, prompting protests by students who accused the institute administration of failing to provide timely medical assistance.

The deceased, identified as Aditya, was a resident of Purnia district in Bihar and was aged between 19 and 20, according to police.

The incident came to light after hostel inmates alerted the institute administration when they found his room locked from the inside.

Police Probe Possible Examination Pressure

Khelgaon Police Station in-charge Nirbhay Kumar said preliminary investigation suggested that examination pressure might have been a factor. Examinations had begun on October 8, he said.

“The deceased was a first-year student from Bihar. He was aged between 19 and 20 years,” Kumar said.

He added that the student’s body had been sent to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for a post-mortem examination.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain subject to investigation. Police findings and the post-mortem report will be important in establishing the cause of death.

Students Allege Delay in Medical Assistance

Following the incident, students staged a protest on campus and accused the institute administration of failing to arrange timely medical assistance.

Vaibhav, a first-year student, alleged that the student was still alive when help was needed and claimed that the campus ambulance did not have a driver available.

He also alleged that the hostel warden stopped students from administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The allegations were made by students during the protest. They have not been independently established in the information provided.

Protesters Demand Accountability

Hundreds of students reportedly gathered on campus, raised slogans against the administration and demanded justice for the deceased.

The protest centred on questions about the response to the emergency and whether medical assistance could have been provided sooner.

The incident has raised concerns among students about emergency arrangements in hostels. Further details about the institute’s response and the outcome of the police investigation were not available in the supplied account.
