Independence Day 2025: 1,090 Personnel Awarded Gallantry and Service Medals

On the occasion of Independence Day 2025, a total of 1,090 personnel from Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence (HG&CD), and Correctional Services have been honoured with Gallantry and Service Medals for their exceptional courage, dedication, and service to the nation.

Breakdown of Awards

  • Medal for Gallantry (GM): 233 personnel
  • President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM): 99 personnel
  • Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM): 758 personnel

Gallantry Medals (GM)

The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals, often at great personal risk.

Distribution of Gallantry Awards:

  • Police Service: 226
  • Fire Service: 6
  • Home Guard & Civil Defence: 1

Region-wise gallantry honours:

  • 54 personnel from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas
  • 152 personnel from Jammu & Kashmir
  • 3 personnel from the North-East
  • 24 personnel from other regions

Service Medals

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) recognises an exceptional record of service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) honours valuable service marked by resourcefulness and dedication.

President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) – 99 awards:

  • Police Service: 89
  • Fire Service: 5
  • Civil Defence & Home Guard: 3
  • Correctional Service: 2

Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) – 758 awards:

  • Police Service: 635
  • Fire Service: 51
  • Civil Defence & Home Guard: 41
  • Correctional Service: 31
