India Elected to UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2026–28 Term

India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a two-year term spanning 2026 to 2028. The election reinforces India’s active role in the global dialogue on sustainable development and international policy coordination.

A Key UN Body for Sustainable Development

The ECOSOC is a principal organ of the United Nations, tasked with advancing the three core pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. It is central to formulating and recommending global policies related to development, equality, and economic progress.

India Commits to Championing Development Goals

Following the announcement, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed gratitude to UN member states for their overwhelming support and trust. In a post on social media, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to championing development issues and strengthening the role and effectiveness of ECOSOC.

Global Recognition of India’s Diplomatic Leadership

India’s election to ECOSOC underscores its increasing leadership in multilateral platforms and its efforts toward inclusive and sustainable global progress. The country is expected to play a proactive role in advancing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during its tenure.
