India vs South Africa T20: Aiden Markram Reaction to Kohli-Rohit T20I Absence

India vs South Africa T20: South Africa captain Aiden Markram delivered a brief but headline-grabbing response when asked about the absence of Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the upcoming T20I series against India. At the pre-series press conference in Cuttack, Markram summed up his feelings in just two words “it’s great” instantly igniting conversations among fans and cricket experts alike.

However, the Proteas skipper was also quick to strike a balanced note, acknowledging India’s depth despite the retirement of its two biggest modern-era superstars from the T20 format. Kohli and Rohit stepped away from T20 internationals in 2024 after their final appearance against South Africa in the T20 World Cup clash in Barbados. Ironically, the duo had tormented the Proteas in the preceding ODI series, scoring heavily as India secured a 2-1 series win.

“It’s great that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not part of the T20I side, but still it’s a great Indian team,” Markram said, as quoted by news agency PTI, underlining both relief and respect in equal measure.

Aiden Markram on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Absence: Relief With Respect

Markram’s candid remark reflects the massive impact Kohli and Rohit have historically had against South Africa, especially in white-ball cricket. Both batters were central to India’s dominance in the recent ODI series, where their consistency made life extremely difficult for the Proteas bowling attack.

Despite admitting that facing a T20 side without the two legends offers some relief, Markram maintained that India remain a formidable opponent. He stressed that the depth of Indian cricket ensures that even without its most iconic names, the team continues to pose a serious challenge in the shortest format.

South Africa Focused on Fearless T20 Brand

When asked about tactical plans for the series, Markram chose not to reveal too much, instead emphasising South Africa’s intent to play an attacking and entertaining brand of T20 cricket. He highlighted the importance of players expressing themselves and backing their natural skills under pressure.

“No extra plans, I guess. It’s T20 cricket, it’s an entertaining format and that’s the brand we want to play. We want guys to free themselves up, enjoy the game, let their best skills be on show,” Markram explained.

He also confirmed that South Africa were yet to finalise their playing XI, stating that more internal discussions were needed before locking in the team combination for the opening match.

Pace Battery in Spotlight

South Africa enter the T20 series with renewed confidence following the return of express fast bowler Anrich Nortje. Markram indicated that the pace attack would be a key weapon against the Indian batting lineup, especially on potentially batting-friendly Indian surfaces.

Along with Nortje, the visitors will bank on the experience of Lungi Ngidi and the unique, awkward skills of Corbin Bosch to trouble Indian batters. “Our fast-bowling stock is growing… The guys will be excited and I’m sure they’ll give 100 per cent,” Markram said, expressing confidence in his bowling unit.

High-Scoring Games Expected as Series Gets Underway

Looking ahead to the opener, Markram hinted at the possibility of high-scoring contests, depending on the nature of the wickets. He suggested that adaptability would be crucial if conditions did not favour outright batting dominance.

“You expect the wickets to be pretty good and the games to be high-scoring. If not, we adapt out there in the middle. Tomorrow is an important start and hopefully we can get off on a good note,” he concluded.

As India and South Africa prepare to renew their T20 rivalry, the spotlight will remain firmly on how a Kohli-Rohit-less Indian lineup responds, and whether Markram’s two-word reaction proves prophetic when the first ball is bowled.
