INS Tamal Commissioned in Russia: India’s Stealth Frigate Joins Navy’s Western Fleet

Published on

Kaliningrad: The Indian Navy has officially commissioned its latest stealth multi-role frigate, INS Tamal, at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. The ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, along with senior Indian and Russian defence officials.

INS Tamal, a Krivak-class stealth warship, is the second of the upgraded Tushil-class series and the eighth such frigate India has acquired from Russia. Designed through Indo-Russian collaboration, the warship incorporates 33% indigenous systems—including critical components developed under India’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.

Key Features of INS Tamal:

  • Stealth Design: Enhanced stealth features reduce radar visibility, increasing survivability in hostile environments.
  • Weapons Systems: Equipped with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, vertical-launch SAMs, 100mm main gun, heavyweight torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, and CIWS.
  • Surveillance & Combat Tech: Integrates advanced EO/IR systems, network-centric warfare tools, and electronic warfare suites.
  • Air Capabilities: Supports multi-role helicopters and airborne early warning systems.
  • Speed & Endurance: Achieves speeds over 30 knots with high tonnage-to-firepower ratio.

The name “Tamal” refers to the mythical sword wielded by Indra, the king of gods. The ship’s mascot—‘The Great Bears’—is inspired by Jambavant from Indian mythology and the Eurasian Brown Bear, Russia’s national animal. Its motto, “Sarvada Sarvatra Vijaya” (Victorious Always Everywhere), reflects the Navy’s enduring mission readiness.

Upon returning to India, INS Tamal will be deployed in the Western Naval Command, bolstering India’s maritime security in the Arabian Sea—especially near Pakistan’s Karachi port. This is also the last warship India will induct from a foreign shipyard, marking a significant milestone in India’s defence self-reliance journey.

The ship is a symbol of India’s growing naval might and the enduring India-Russia defence partnership, blending advanced technologies from both nations for maximum maritime effectiveness.
