BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has proposed the launch of a Jagannath Temple e-Hundi system to enable devotees from across the globe to make online donations to the revered Jagannath Temple. The initiative is aimed at providing a secure, transparent and convenient platform for devotees who wish to contribute to the temple but are unable to visit Puri in person.

The proposal was discussed at a high-level meeting chaired by Prithiviraj Harichandan.

Jagannath Temple e-Hundi to Connect Global Devotees

Officials said the proposed digital platform will allow devotees to make offerings from anywhere in the world.

The system is expected to support donations linked to special occasions such as:

  • Birthdays
  • Wedding anniversaries
  • Fulfilment of vows
  • Religious observances
  • Personal milestones

The move responds to a long-standing demand from devotees living outside Odisha and overseas who have sought an official online channel for contributing to the temple.

Why the e-Hundi Initiative Matters

The introduction of a digital donation platform could significantly expand the temple’s reach among the global Jagannath devotee community.

Apart from convenience, the system is expected to improve transparency and streamline the donation process. Officials also discussed providing eligible income tax benefits for contributions made through the platform.

Importantly, authorities clarified that the funds collected through the e-Hundi system will be used solely for temple development and enhancement of related services.

Cybersecurity a Key Priority

A major focus of the discussions was ensuring strong cybersecurity measures to protect devotees from fraud and misuse.

Minister Harichandan directed officials to build a robust and secure system with adequate safeguards against cyber threats.

The objective is to ensure that devotees can make contributions with complete confidence while maintaining transparency and accountability in fund management.

Digital Transformation of Temple Services

The proposed e-Hundi system reflects the growing adoption of digital services in religious institutions across India.

If implemented, the initiative could make Jagannath Temple one of the leading temples in the country to offer a dedicated global online donation platform, strengthening engagement with millions of devotees while supporting the temple’s long-term development goals.
