KL Rahul Starts England Tour with a Century

Published on

KL Rahul has emerged as one of India’s most improved Test batsmen over the past year. Earlier, the Karnataka batter faced uncertainty in the Test squad and was even dropped from the playing XI. However, through hard work on his red-ball game, Rahul has proven his value both as an opener and a middle-order batsman.

With Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement, Rahul is now expected to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in Test cricket. The upcoming England tour will be his first major assignment as a senior batter in the squad. Previously, when Rohit and Virat Kohli were active, the pressure mostly fell on them, but now Rahul must shoulder greater responsibility.

He performed impressively during the Australia series as an opener, and recently continued his good form by scoring a classy century against the England Lions in the second unofficial Test. After the IPL, Rahul reportedly requested the BCCI to include him in the second unofficial Test, and he made a strong start to the England tour by scoring 116 runs. During his innings, he formed important partnerships with Karun Nair and Dhruv Jurel before getting out.

This performance will boost his confidence ahead of the five-match Test series against England, starting June 20.

While his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal struggled again, the young batter is expected to bounce back given his talent. Meanwhile, Karun Nair and Dhruv Jurel have impressed with their skill and could fill middle-order slots, potentially replacing Kohli. The rest of the middle order will likely include newly appointed captain Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja.
