Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has reiterated that the Kotia group of villages in Koraput district has been an integral part of Odisha since the formation of the separate state in 1936. He has also assured that his government will take all necessary steps through legal and constitutional channels to protect the state’s territorial integrity.
Majhi made the statement in a letter responding to concerns raised by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik over the long-standing boundary dispute involving Odisha and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
The Chief Minister said the sensitive issue required a constructive approach focused on legally sustainable solutions. He suggested that Patnaik’s letter appeared to view the matter from a political perspective rather than concentrating on ways to resolve the dispute.
Odisha Government Focuses on Legal Action
Majhi reiterated that his government remained committed to safeguarding Odisha’s territorial interests through appropriate legal and constitutional forums.
The dispute has returned to the spotlight following reports of Andhra Pradesh’s plans to conduct local body elections in parts of the Kotia region. Odisha has been examining legal options to protect its claims over the disputed villages.
The state government has stressed the importance of respecting judicial proceedings and urged all concerned to exercise restraint and act responsibly while the matter remains sensitive.
Development of Kotia Villages a Priority
Alongside its legal efforts, the Odisha government has said it is prioritising development and public services in Kotia and adjoining areas.
According to Majhi, a committee headed by the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister has been formed to oversee integrated development in Kotia Gram Panchayat. Ministers and senior officials have also been visiting the region to assess local needs and coordinate development work.
The government has emphasised improving public services, promoting inclusive growth and enhancing the socio-economic well-being of residents.
Majhi Seeks Constructive Suggestions From Naveen Patnaik
The Chief Minister has invited Patnaik to offer constructive suggestions for resolving the long-pending dispute, saying the government would consider proposals aimed at protecting Odisha’s interests.
The exchange highlights the continuing political debate over the Kotia issue, with the opposition seeking clarity on the government’s response and the ruling administration reaffirming its commitment to defend the state’s claim.
The dispute has remained a longstanding concern along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border, involving competing administrative claims over villages in the Kotia region.
