India celebrated its 79th Independence Day with great fervour as the National Flag was hoisted by Hon’ble Shri Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, Chairperson of the Lokpal of India, in the distinguished presence of Hon’ble Members Shri Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Shri Justice Sanjay Yadav, Shri Sushil Chandra, Shri Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Shri Pankaj Kumar and Shri Ajay Tirkey. Justice Khanwilkar conveyed heartfelt Independence Day wishes to all Hon’ble Members, senior officers, staff and their family members during the solemn ceremony.

He emphasised that this historic day is an occasion to recall the unparalleled courage, foresight and sacrifices of all those who contributed to the freedom we enjoy today. He underscored that the freedom movement was not led only by iconic leaders whose names are recorded in history, but also by millions of ordinary citizens – farmers, labourers, students, homemakers and tribal communities – who participated tirelessly at the grassroots level and challenged British rule in every village, street and household.

Justice Khanwilkar further stated that the nation must always remember the sacrifices of towering leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He said the country should bow its head in deep gratitude not only to these visionaries but also to every individual who played a role in the nation’s freedom struggle.

He went on to express his sincere appreciation for the brave children of Maa Bharati who protect the country’s borders, respond courageously to natural calamities, pandemics and global crises, and consistently demonstrate the indomitable spirit of India.

Justice Khanwilkar called upon the people of the nation to honour the architects of modern India — including scientists, doctors, engineers, advocates, teachers, artists and countless professionals — whose continuous efforts since Independence have built the foundation of a progressive India. He recognised their long-term dedication, vision and hard work as the pillar of national development.

He also stressed the importance of unitedly confronting not only external threats but also internal challenges such as terrorism, nepotism, narrow regionalism, misinformation and corruption, which weaken the nation’s spirit and hamper national unity and democratic values. He said that only through collective determination and consistent individual actions can citizens become meaningful contributors to the nation’s ambitious goal of ‘Viksit Bharat@2047’.
