  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Government says there is no LPG shortage in India and supply remains stable.
  • Around 50 lakh LPG cylinders are delivered daily across the country.
  • Domestic LPG production has increased by 28 percent, according to officials.

New Delhi: The government on Thursday moved to address concerns about a possible LPG shortage in India, stating that the country has adequate fuel supplies and that distribution systems are functioning normally.

Senior officials from multiple ministries, including the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said Indian refineries are operating at high capacity and that fuel distribution networks remain stable.

Authorities also appealed to citizens not to believe rumours or misinformation circulating about shortages and urged people to avoid panic booking of LPG cylinders.

LPG Shortage in India Concerns Addressed by Government

Officials said Indian refineries are currently operating at very high capacity utilisation, with some facilities exceeding 100 percent operational output.

Retail fuel outlets across the country are functioning normally and have adequate stocks.

The data suggests that the domestic energy system remains stable despite global concerns about fuel supply chains.

Government officials confirmed that around 50 lakh LPG cylinders are being delivered every day to households.

Meanwhile, domestic LPG production has increased by 28 percent, helping maintain supply levels.

Coordinated Measures to Ensure Energy Security

Officials from several ministries participated in the review process, including:

  • Ministry of External Affairs
  • Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways
  • Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

The government said coordinated efforts are underway to ensure maritime safety, energy supply stability and support for Indian nationals abroad.

Priority Supply for Essential Sectors

For non domestic LPG, the government has prioritised supply for essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions.

A three member committee consisting of executive directors from major oil companies has been formed to review supply allocations.

The committee includes representatives from:

  • Indian Oil Corporation Limited
  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited
  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited

The group will consult with state governments and industry associations to ensure fair distribution to restaurants, hotels and commercial users.

Alternate Fuels to Support Commercial Sector

Authorities are also encouraging the use of alternative fuels to reduce pressure on LPG supply.

Measures include:

  • Availability of kerosene through retail outlets and public distribution system channels
  • Use of fuel oil for industrial and commercial consumers

State Pollution Control Boards have been advised to temporarily allow hospitality businesses to use biomass, RDF pellets, kerosene or coal for one month.

What the policy shift indicates is an attempt to protect domestic LPG supplies while still allowing commercial establishments to continue operations.

Government Urges Citizens to Avoid Panic

Officials emphasised that India’s energy supply chain remains stable and that rumours about shortages are unfounded.

The government has urged citizens to avoid panic booking of LPG cylinders and rely on official information sources.

The data suggests that maintaining public confidence and preventing panic buying is critical to ensuring smooth distribution of essential fuels across the country.
