Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Approves Uniform Civil Code Bill, Set to Be Tabled in Assembly

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code moved a step closer to becoming law after the state Cabinet approved the UCC Bill during a special meeting held at Jagdishpur, a historic town near Bhopal. The Bill will now be placed before the Legislative Assembly for discussion and passage.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the decision as a significant milestone in the state’s legislative journey, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to equality, justice and a uniform legal framework for all citizens.

Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code Bill Cleared by Cabinet

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the proposed legislation does not violate the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution and is intended to provide equal opportunities and equal rights to all communities.

He said the venue for the Cabinet meeting was chosen for its historical significance, recalling the legacy of Rani Kamalapati and describing the decision as a tribute to the region’s heritage and spirit of sacrifice.

According to the Chief Minister, the government constituted a committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to prepare the draft Bill. The committee conducted consultations across districts and divisions of the state and also held discussions in Bhopal with political parties and representatives of various social and religious organisations.

The Chief Minister noted that while several political parties and organisations participated in the consultation process, the Congress did not take part.

Government Cites Public Consultations and Support

The state government said feedback gathered during the consultation process indicated support for the proposed law from different sections of society.

According to the Chief Minister, many participants viewed a uniform legal framework as a measure that could strengthen legal protection and ensure equal rights, particularly for women.

He also linked the proposal to the broader vision of building a developed India by 2047, stating that the initiative reflects the principles of equality, unity and inclusive development.

Bill to Be Introduced in Upcoming Assembly Session

Following Cabinet approval, the Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code Bill will be introduced during the next session of the State Assembly. If passed, Madhya Pradesh will join the growing list of states that have moved towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code.

The proposed legislation is expected to generate significant debate both inside and outside the Assembly, with discussions likely to focus on its legal, constitutional and social implications. The final shape of the law will depend on the legislative process and any amendments considered during the Assembly’s deliberations.
