Nitin Gadkari Urges Farmers to Boost Biofuel Production for India’s Self-Sufficiency

Published on

Pune: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday emphasised that India must increase its biofuel production to become self-sufficient and reduce costly imports. Speaking at the 10th anniversary of World Biofuel Day organised by Praj Industries, Gadkari said farmers must play a dual role — producing both food and fuel.

“Indian farmers should be encouraged to become fuel producers along with food producers to cut down on biofuel imports,” he said.

Nitin Gadkari biofuel production push to cut imports

Gadkari revealed that India currently imports biofuel worth ₹22 lakh crore annually, a burden that could be significantly reduced through domestic production. He highlighted that nearly 40% of air pollution comes from motor transport and stressed that biofuel will be critical for balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.

Agriculture diversification for rural economy revival

Pointing out that 60–65% of India’s population depends on agriculture, yet the sector contributes only 12–14% to GDP, Gadkari said the government is promoting agricultural diversification to include power and energy generation.

“Farmers are producing ample crops but aren’t getting fair prices. If we use this produce for biofuel, it will not only boost farmers’ income but also transform the rural economy,” he added.
