Odisha Heavy Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

Active monsoon conditions are set to bring heavy rainfall, lightning and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha.

  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for seven districts including Koraput, Rayagada and Bhadrak.
  • Yellow Warning has been announced for 15 districts due to thunderstorms and gusty winds.
  • Active southwest monsoon conditions are expected to keep weather unstable in the coming days.

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha heavy rain alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put multiple districts on alert as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are expected to impact large parts of the state. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious as active monsoon conditions continue to influence weather patterns across Odisha.

The latest forecast suggests that widespread rainfall activity will continue, raising concerns about localized flooding, traffic disruptions and lightning-related risks in several areas.

Odisha Heavy Rain Alert: Seven Districts Likely to Receive Heavy Rainfall

According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Balashwar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput districts.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in isolated pockets of these districts. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as ongoing monsoon activity may intensify rainfall during the day.

Additionally, a Yellow Warning has been issued for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagada, Khordha, Puri, katak and Jajpur districts. These areas may experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph.

Why the Odisha Heavy Rain Alert Matters

The alert comes as the southwest monsoon remains active over Odisha, creating favourable conditions for continuous rainfall across multiple districts. Several regions have already witnessed intermittent showers in recent days, and similar weather conditions are expected to persist.

Prolonged rainfall could impact transportation, agriculture, construction work and daily activities. While rainfall supports water resources and farming, excessive rain may lead to waterlogging and disruptions in urban and rural areas.

The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas and not take shelter under trees during lightning activity. Farmers, fishermen, construction workers and others engaged in outdoor work have been urged to follow official advisories before planning their activities.

With monsoon activity expected to remain strong, authorities have encouraged people to stay updated with official weather bulletins and remain prepared for sudden weather changes in the coming days.
