Bhubaneswar: The Odisha heavy alert has intensified as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen into a depression and subsequently a deep depression, according to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) update.

As of 5.30 am IST on September 21, 2026, the system was located over the eastcentral and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal after moving west-northwestwards.

The system is expected to continue moving in the same direction, increasing the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Odisha.

Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Likely to Intensify

According to the IMD, the well-marked low-pressure area is very likely to intensify into a depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

It is then expected to strengthen further into a deep depression during the following 24 hours over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.

The system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards after further intensification.

Deep Depression May Reach Odisha Coast on September 23

The latest IMD forecast indicates that the deep depression is very likely to reach near the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around the forenoon of September 23.

The system’s approach towards the coast is expected to significantly increase rainfall activity across Odisha.

Extremely Heavy Rain Forecast in Odisha

The IMD has warned of intense rainfall during the middle of the week as the system moves closer to the coast.

According to the latest warning:

  • September 22: Very heavy rainfall likely.
  • September 23: Extremely heavy rainfall likely.
  • September 24: Extremely heavy rainfall likely.
  • September 25: Very heavy rainfall likely.

The IMD has also forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over south Odisha and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh on September 23 and 24.

Odisha Weather to Remain Unsettled

The approaching system is expected to bring a significant increase in rainfall activity across Odisha.

Weather conditions are likely to remain unsettled through the middle of the week, with several areas potentially receiving heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to follow official IMD warnings and instructions issued by local administrations.

Fishermen Advised to Follow Marine Warnings

As the system strengthens over the Bay of Bengal, sea conditions are expected to become increasingly rough.

Fishermen and others involved in marine activities should follow the latest IMD advisories and avoid venturing into the sea during periods covered by official warnings.

IMD Monitoring System Closely

The IMD is continuing to monitor the system’s movement and intensity.

While the current update identifies it as a well-marked low-pressure area, the immediate forecast indicates further strengthening into a depression and subsequently a deep depression.

Track and Intensity Could Change

The system’s eventual intensity and exact track will depend on subsequent atmospheric and oceanic conditions.

The IMD is expected to issue further updates as the system moves closer to the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast.

Residents should rely on the latest official IMD forecasts and local administration advisories, particularly in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flooding.
