BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha weather alert has been intensified after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a prolonged spell of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state over the next five days. The weather department has issued a red alert for four districts and orange warnings for several others, cautioning that adverse weather conditions could disrupt normal life.

Officials have warned that the active southwest monsoon may lead to flash floods, overflowing rivers, landslides in hilly regions and severe waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Odisha Weather Alert: Red and Orange Warnings Across Multiple Districts

For the first 24 hours, the IMD has placed Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri under a Red Alert, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The latest forecast highlights:

Red Alert: Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
Orange Warning: Bargarh, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Ganjam.
Yellow Warning: Several coastal and northern districts are expected to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

The weather system is expected to shift on the second day, bringing Red Alert conditions to Sambalpur, Anugol, Subarnapur, Boudh and Kandhamal, while districts including Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam and Nayagarh remain under Orange Warning.

From July 5 to July 8, the focus of heavy rainfall is expected to move towards northern Odisha, with Sundargarh, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall for three consecutive days.

The prolonged spell of intense rainfall may significantly affect transport, agriculture and public infrastructure across the state. Flooding of roads, overflowing streams, landslides in hilly regions and poor visibility could disrupt road connectivity and daily activities in several districts.
