Pakistani Celebrity Social Media Accounts Banned Again In India
Several Pakistani celebrities’ social media accounts have once again been blocked in India, just a day after a technical glitch led to their temporary unblocking, sparking online speculation and backlash.
On Thursday morning, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts of stars such as Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, Fawad Khan, Shahid Afridi, Mawra Hocane, and Saba Qamar were once again inaccessible to Indian users.
Users trying to visit these profiles now see a message that reads:
“Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”
Government Clarifies: Technical Glitch Rectified
According to government sources cited by IndiaToday.in, the temporary visibility of the accounts was the result of a technical glitch, which has now been fixed.
“Some technical glitch led to the unblocking. Rectified now,” a government official said, confirming that access to these profiles on Instagram, X, and YouTube was never intentionally restored.
July 2 Glitch Sparks Confusion and Speculation
The reappearance of Pakistani profiles on July 2 led many to believe the ban had been lifted quietly. Accounts of several celebrities and Pakistani YouTube channels like Hum TV, ARY Digital, and Har Pal Geo became visible to Indian users, triggering widespread social media buzz.
However, by Thursday morning, these accounts were once again geoblocked, restoring the previous restrictions.
The original social media ban came in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a military offensive by India targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Several Pakistani celebrities had publicly criticised the operation, leading to a strong public and political backlash in India, which reportedly influenced the decision to restrict access to their online presence.
Despite the controversy, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has not issued an official statement regarding the temporary reappearance and subsequent reblocking of the Pakistani social media accounts.
The situation remains sensitive, especially given the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
