Paytm Now 100% Indian-Owned, Joins League of Tata With Zero Chinese Stake
New Delhi: In a major milestone for India’s tech and fintech ecosystem, Paytm has officially become a 100% Indian-owned company, shedding all Chinese stake and reaffirming its position as a truly homegrown digital giant. With Antfin (Netherlands) Holding BV, a subsidiary of China’s Ant Financial, selling its remaining 5.84% stake in One97 Communications, Paytm’s parent company, the digital payments leader is now as Indian as Tata, according to sources close to the deal.
Paytm Ant Group’s Complete Exit Marks a New Era
The exit, valued at approximately ₹3,803 crore, was executed via a block deal, making Paytm entirely free of Chinese ownership. This comes almost a decade after founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma declared, “We are as Indian as Maruti,” in an interview defending the company’s Indian identity despite foreign investments.
That symbolic statement is now a reality. A source noted:
“Paytm is now as Indian as Tata.”
A Decade-Long Vision Realized
Since its early days, Paytm has aligned itself closely with India’s digital growth mission. Sharma has consistently emphasized the company’s India-first innovation, local compliance, and deep commitment to national economic goals.
Back in 2016, he reiterated Paytm’s dedication to:
- Empowering Indian merchants and consumers
- Complying with Indian regulations
- Fostering tech-led financial inclusion
With Ant Group’s exit, Paytm’s cap table (ownership structure) has now tilted toward domestic and global institutional investors, further strengthening the company’s governance, transparency, and investor confidence.
Financial Momentum: Q1 FY26 Results Beat Estimates
The timing of this ownership change is noteworthy as it follows a landmark financial quarter:
- Net Profit: ₹123 crore (Paytm’s first fully profitable quarter)
- Operating Revenue: ₹1,918 crore (up 28% YoY)
- Contribution Profit: ₹1,151 crore (up 52% YoY)
This turnaround showcases Paytm’s sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and product-market fit.
Product Innovations: Enhancing the Digital Payment Experience
Paytm continues to lead with customer-first features that enhance user experience and digital trust. Recent additions to the app include:
- Hide/Unhide Payments for privacy
- ‘Receive Money’ Home Screen Widget for faster access
- Custom UPI IDs (without revealing mobile numbers)
- Downloadable UPI Statements in Excel/PDF
- Consolidated UPI Balance View across all bank accounts
Global Reach: UPI Now Supported in 7 Countries
Expanding its reach, Paytm now supports UPI-based payments abroad, enabling seamless transactions for Indian travelers in:
- UAE
- Singapore
- France
- Mauritius
- Bhutan
- Sri Lanka
- Nepal
Conclusion: A Truly Indian Digital Champion
With this transformation, Paytm joins the ranks of India’s most trusted brands like Tata and Maruti – built in India, made for India, and now owned by India.
The company’s journey from a startup to a profitable, publicly listed, Indian-owned fintech leader serves as a blueprint for others aiming to build sustainable and self-reliant digital businesses.
