PM Modi Announces OCI Card Eligibility for Indian-Origin Citizens in Trinidad & Tobago

Published on

Port of Spain: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his first-ever visit to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister, lauded the courage and cultural resilience of the Indian community in the Caribbean nation. Addressing a vibrant community gathering, he described their journey as one of “hope, hardship, and heritage,” stating, “You were not just migrants, but messengers of a timeless civilisation.”

In a landmark announcement, PM Modi declared that people of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago will now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards, granting them the right to live, work, and travel to India with ease. “We want you to connect deeper with your ancestral land,” he said.

Modi also carried a symbolic gift — a replica of the Ram Mandir and holy water from the Sarayu River in Ayodhya — as a gesture of cultural unity. He recalled the diaspora’s earlier contribution of shilas and sacred water for the temple’s construction, highlighting the spiritual bond between the two nations.

The Prime Minister was received with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, cultural performances, and a warm welcome by Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her Cabinet. He expressed gratitude on social media, saying the Indian diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago has not only preserved their heritage but also contributed significantly to the country’s development.

During his two-day visit, Modi will also hold talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and address a Joint Session of the Parliament. This marks the first prime ministerial visit to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999, aiming to give a renewed push to the strong cultural and economic ties shared by both countries.
