PM Modi Concludes Historic Visit to Cyprus, Heads to G7 Summit in Canada

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his historic two-day visit to Cyprus on Monday, marking a significant milestone in India-Cyprus relations. The visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over 23 years, underscored India’s growing diplomatic engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union (EU).

PM Modi departed for Canada, where he will participate in the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, beginning Tuesday.

Strengthening Strategic Ties with a Key Mediterranean Partner

During the June 15–16 visit, PM Modi held high-level talks with President Nikos Christodoulides, participated in business forums, and signed multiple agreements aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, technology, tourism, and connectivity.

Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), described the visit as “a reaffirmation of the enduring friendship and trusted partnership” between the two nations, adding that the trip carries strategic significance within the broader India-EU and India-Mediterranean context.

PM Modi Conferred Cyprus’ Highest Honour

In a prestigious ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, President Christodoulides awarded PM Modi the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’ highest civilian honour. This is the 23rd international award conferred on Modi, recognising his stature as a global statesman.

Welcoming Modi, Christodoulides said, “Your visit reflects the clear political will to further strengthen our bilateral relations across multiple sectors. Cyprus remains a predictable and secure ally of India in this geostrategic region.”

The official welcome included a military band, the national anthems of both countries, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III. A private meeting between the two leaders followed, resulting in a joint declaration that outlined a roadmap for deepening cooperation.

President Christodoulides thanked PM Modi for India’s long-standing support on the Cyprus issue, particularly in seeking a resolution to the Turkish occupation and efforts to reunify the island. He also expressed strong support for India’s fight against cross-border terrorism.

Cyprus: India’s Gateway to Europe

The Cypriot President affirmed Cyprus’ role as India’s gateway to Europe, especially as it prepares to assume the EU Council Presidency in January 2026. Both leaders committed to leveraging Cyprus’ EU membership to strengthen India-EU strategic relations.

Business leaders from both countries demonstrated strong interest in deepening economic engagement, laying the foundation for increased trade and investment.

As Prime Minister Modi heads to the G7 Summit in Canada, his Cyprus visit has firmly set the tone for India’s expanding global footprint.
