PM Modi Congratulates Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim on ASEAN Chairmanship
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and confirmed that he will virtually attend the 47th ASEAN-India Summit being held in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28, 2025.
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said,
“Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed best wishes for the success of upcoming Summits. Look forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually, and to further deepening of the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
Strengthening Bilateral and Regional Cooperation
During their conversation, both leaders discussed enhancing bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across various sectors including trade, technology, education, and security.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared details of the exchange on social media, stating that PM Modi will participate virtually due to Diwali festivities in India. “I respect that decision and extend my Deepavali greetings to him and the entire people of India,” Anwar said.
He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with India and deepening ASEAN–India cooperation for regional peace and prosperity.

Malaysia, as the 2025 ASEAN Chair, aims to promote inclusive and sustainable development, positioning Kuala Lumpur as the diplomatic capital of Southeast Asia during the summit.
The three-day event will conclude on October 28 with the handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines, marking a successful year for Malaysia in advancing regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
