Russia Presents Evidence in Alleged Putin Residence Drone Attack as Ukraine Denies Claims

Moscow shares drone fragments with US as accusations raise tensions and complicate Ukraine war negotiations

Published on

New Delhi: A Russian military serviceman was shown standing beside the wreckage of a drone that Moscow claims was intercepted while repelling an alleged Ukrainian assault on the Russian presidential residence in the Novgorod region. The footage, released by the Russian Defence Ministry on December 31, 2025, forms part of what officials describe as Putin residence drone attack evidence, which Russia says proves Kyiv attempted to strike President Vladimir Putin’s residence earlier this week.

According to Russian authorities, parts of the destroyed drone were presented as proof during a formal handover involving a senior Russian official and a United States military attaché. Moscow has accused Ukraine of launching a large-scale operation using 91 long-range attack drones aimed at the presidential complex in northern Russia, an allegation that, if confirmed, would significantly alter the political atmosphere surrounding ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the war.

Russia Presents Putin Residence Drone Attack Evidence to US Officials

A video shared on the Russian Defence Ministry’s official Telegram channel showed Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces, transferring what he identified as a key drone component to the US military attaché. Kostyukov described the item as the navigation control mechanism recovered from the debris of one of the downed drones.

Russian officials claim that specialists from the country’s security services extracted and analyzed data stored in the drone’s navigation system. According to Kostyukov, the decrypted information leaves no doubt about the intended target of the operation. He stated that the data clearly indicated the drones were programmed to strike the complex of buildings that make up the Russian president’s residence in the Novgorod region.

Claims of Drone Strike Complicate Russia-Ukraine Peace Efforts

Moscow has argued that the alleged attack represents a serious escalation and could fundamentally change the terms under which peace talks with Ukraine are conducted. Russian officials insist that targeting a presidential residence crosses a red line and demonstrates hostile intent beyond battlefield engagements.

The accusation comes at a sensitive time, as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict have been ongoing. Analysts suggest that such claims, whether verified or disputed, risk hardening positions on both sides and making compromise more difficult. The alleged use of dozens of long-range drones also raises questions about capabilities, intent, and the broader security situation inside Russian territory.

Trump’s Reaction Shifts From Sympathy to Skepticism

US President Donald Trump initially reacted with sympathy toward Moscow’s claims. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said that President Putin had personally informed him of the alleged incident and described him as being “very angry” about what had occurred. Trump’s remarks suggested early concern about the potential consequences of the reported attack.

However, by Wednesday, Trump’s tone appeared to change. He shared a New York Post editorial on social media that accused Russia of obstructing peace efforts in Ukraine. The shift signaled growing skepticism in Washington and highlighted divisions over how seriously the allegations should be taken without independent verification.

Ukraine Rejects Allegations and Calls Them Disinformation

Ukraine has firmly denied any involvement in an attack on Putin’s residence. Ukrainian officials dismissed the claims as part of a broader Russian disinformation campaign designed to undermine Kyiv’s relationship with Washington. They argue that the timing of the accusation is intended to create distrust following a recent meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Kyiv maintains that it has no interest in escalating the conflict by targeting symbolic sites inside Russia and insists that Moscow is using the alleged incident to shift blame and influence international opinion. As both sides continue to trade accusations, the international community remains cautious, awaiting independent assessments of the so-called evidence and its implications for the war.
