Bengaluru: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sambit Patra on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of lacking facts and creating political confusion over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Patra questioned Gandhi’s demand for a debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said political discussions should take place on the floor of Parliament rather than through public confrontations.
Patra alleged that Gandhi did not have sufficient data or knowledge about important national issues and accused him of creating disorder in political discourse.
Patra Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Demand for Debate
Reacting to Gandhi’s call for a debate with the Prime Minister, Patra said the Opposition leader should use Parliament as the forum for political discussions.
He questioned Gandhi’s ability to participate in parliamentary debates and alleged that he lacked the patience to remain in the House for extended discussions.
Patra also said that Gandhi carried no data on important issues and accused him of creating confusion instead of engaging in meaningful debate.
These remarks were part of the BJP’s broader political criticism of the Congress leader.
BJP Accuses Congress of Spreading Confusion Over SIR
Patra also targeted the Congress over its campaign against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The SIR exercise has become a major political issue, with opposition parties alleging irregularities and raising concerns about the deletion of voters’ names.
The BJP, however, has defended the exercise, arguing that the revision is intended to identify and remove duplicate, deceased, shifted and otherwise ineligible entries from electoral rolls.
Patra accused the Congress of misleading people over the process and creating confusion about voter-list revisions.
The Opposition has maintained that the exercise raises concerns about voters potentially losing their right to participate in elections.
Patra Targets INDIA Bloc Over Political Differences
The BJP MP also questioned the unity of the INDIA bloc, referring to the political differences between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
He cited Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the AAP government in Punjab and questioned how the two parties could remain alliance partners while attacking each other politically.
Patra challenged Gandhi to clarify the relationship between the Congress and AAP, arguing that their contrasting positions needed public discussion.
He also criticised the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, questioning the attendance figures claimed by opposition leaders.
SIR Debate Continues Between BJP and Opposition
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has triggered a political confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.
Congress and other INDIA bloc leaders have raised concerns over voter deletions and the transparency of the revision process. The BJP has rejected the allegations and defended the Election Commission’s exercise.
The controversy is likely to remain a major political issue as both sides continue to exchange allegations over electoral transparency and the functioning of democratic institutions.
