Mumbai: Indian benchmark equity indices extended their winning streak for the fourth consecutive trading session on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty rising around 1.6 per cent each amid broad-based buying.
The 30-share BSE Sensex surged 1,225.07 points, or 1.62 per cent, to close at 76,917.85. The NSE Nifty 50 climbed 370.05 points, or 1.58 per cent, to settle at 23,810.85.
Both benchmark indices ended near their respective day’s highs, extending the market recovery to a fourth session.
The rally has lifted investor sentiment after renewed buying interest in heavyweight stocks and improved confidence in domestic equities.
FMCG and Banking Stocks Lead Market Gains
Among the Sensex constituents, 25 of the 30 companies ended in positive territory.
Hindustan Unilever was among the top performers, gaining nearly 4.2 per cent. Bharti Airtel advanced around 4 per cent, while HDFC Bank rose more than 3.6 per cent.
On the losing side, Power Grid Corporation declined nearly 2.3 per cent, State Bank of India slipped around 1.8 per cent and NTPC fell nearly 0.9 per cent.
The sectoral performance was also largely positive. On the BSE, 22 of the 28 sectoral indices closed higher.
FMCG stocks led the gains, rising around 3.4 per cent. Realty advanced more than 2.3 per cent, while private banking stocks gained nearly 2.1 per cent.
In contrast, PSU Bank stocks dropped more than 1.3 per cent, while Utilities and Power sectors also ended lower.
Midcap and Smallcap Indices Also Close Higher
The broader market participated in Tuesday’s rally, although gains were comparatively moderate.
The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained around 1.1 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 added approximately 0.3 per cent.
Market breadth on the BSE remained positive. Shares of 2,510 companies advanced, while 1,895 declined and 201 remained unchanged.
The figures indicate that buying interest extended beyond the major benchmark constituents.
What Supported the Market Rally?
Market sentiment received support from several factors, including easing crude oil prices, resilient corporate earnings and renewed foreign investor interest in Indian equities.
Foreign portfolio investors were net buyers in four of the five trading sessions leading up to Tuesday, according to market reports.
Buying in heavyweight banking and consumer stocks also helped the benchmark indices extend their gains.
However, investors continue to monitor global market developments, crude oil movements, foreign fund flows and quarterly corporate earnings for further direction.
What Investors Should Watch Next
With the Nifty closing above 23,800, market participants will watch whether the index can sustain its recent recovery.
The continuation of the rally will depend on buying interest in heavyweight stocks, global cues and the stability of crude oil prices.
Investors should also watch upcoming corporate earnings and foreign institutional investor activity, as these factors could influence market direction in the coming sessions.
